It doesn’t involve keeping meticulous records of your own budget spending for social media marketing. It’s your customers’ budget that you need to keep a close eye on. In other words, forget about customer response to your social media marketing efforts and instead take a close look at those customers’ motivations when utilizing social media marketing, and keep a watch on their investments as they invest in the marketers’ brands.

Even as it is becoming quite clear that social media marketing leads to serious advertising cost savings, it is not always so straightforward to connect specific social media actions directly to sales. No one disputes the improved efficacy of market research efforts when marketers implement online prediction markets or delve into forums to obtain vital customer feedback on product concepts, however.

One of the biggest goals of all social media marketing campaigns has always been to increase brand awareness. In a strikingly astute maneuver a few days before Election Day 2008, Starbucks promoted a free coffee giveaway by running spots on Saturday Night Live and YouTube which were recirculated on Twitter, all culminating in a huge increase in brand exposure. On an even deeper and potentially more significant level, brand exposure can also be radically improved by social media performed with an intent to actively engage customers. When Southwest Airlines incorporated podcasts, videos and other social meda tools to promote its “Nuts About You” blog, the airline garnered valuable insight on touchy issues like assigned seating.

Even that time-honored practice of promoting things through word of mouth is increased in a predominantly positive fashion as satisfied loyal customers spread the word, either about the brand itself or through some stellar social media created by the company. Likewise, unhappy dissatisfied customers can have a negative impact through these same channels.

This question should NOT even be a question,

I believe that teachers shold NOT be friends with students. Facebook is a social network which means it is not a place that teachers and students shold meet or socialize. As a social media manager I reccommend that parents start by managing their children’s social networking to help keep our children safe and protected in cyber space.

They reaised this question on The View yesterday and I agree with the ladies on The View you don’t socialize with your therapist or psychologist and likewise students shold not be allowed to socialize with their teachers on Facebook, Twitter, Linkinden or any other social network.

The easist way for this to be resolved is to possibly allow the teachers to create a Facebook Fan Page that will allow the students to like the page but that page should only contain school related material. This may or may not work but it is just a possibility as to how to offer a way for teachers and students to make a safe connection in today’s cyber world of social media.

As parents we have to make sure that our children are fully protected in this fast growing social media world that is becoming a new way of living for our children.

Tips for parents regarding soical media and your child:

Go online to Facebook or Twitter with your child and talk to them about their friends on their page.

Talk to your child about the adults in their life such as, teachers, coaches, church leaders etc and ask them if any of them are on Facebook, Twitter, or delicious, etc.

Talk to your children about the videos on You Tube and ask if anybody they know has any videos that are funny or interesting posted on You Tube

Theses tips will help you open a meaningful dialogue with your children about their online activity without making them feel you are invading their private space.

Lastly, as far as kid’s privacy we need to remember that our parents knew our friends and their parnets and as parents we have the right and responsibility to be envolved in our children’s friendships which in this case may be marked by thier social media connections.

It is time that we become soical media parents to keep up with our very social media children.

As a social media manager I have become keenly aware of the power of soical networking. As a parent, you need to recognize the social media power and and upgrade to 21st Century parents.

My wife went on a shopping spree a while back. She bought a couple pairs of pants, 3 or 4 shirts, and a dress. She returned most of it a few days later.

Google, on the other hand, is taking a bit more extreme approach to buying sprees as it gobbles startups for breakfast. All of the technology they’re buying is, not surprisingly, from the social media sector. Late last week, Google bought Angstro, best-known for their efforts to build a real-time social address book. Earlier this month, the company bought Slide (social gaming), Jambool (online gaming currency), and Like.com (visual search with an emphasis on shopping). Now the company has purchased SocialDeck, another gaming company with properties that let users compete across mobile and social platforms.

Gee, do you think Google is planning to crush Facebook and its Farmville-powered social stickiness (and accompanying advertising dollars)?

It appears, in fact, that Google intends to out-fun Facebook when it launches its own social platform (presumably called Google Me). This actually makes quite a bit of sense from a revenue and social graph perspective, though. Google already has solid communications and messaging platforms in place, ranging from Gmail to video to Wave (Wave might be dead in its current form, but you can bet the technology will pop up elsewhere). Focusing acquisitions on gaming, then, is just icing on the communications cake.

With last week’s rollout of Google Voice integration with Gmail, it’s clear that Google wants us, well, Googling, all the time. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just business. However, if a company is deeply vested in voice, video, entertainment, collaboration, email, search, and directed advertising, there are clearly opportunities for growth as the company layers on social components. For very small investments, Google will be able to roll out major pieces of its social initiatives (whatever those finally end up being) very quickly.

This is how Google Apps originally began. Both Google Docs and Spreadsheets came out of acquisitions, although Spreadsheets incubated in Google Labs longer.

However, it took a while for Docs, Spreadsheets (and ultimately Forms and Presentations) to be closely integrated into a real suite. Can Google pull together a social network fast enough to give Facebook a run its money?

We’ll see, but Google has far more to gain (or lose) in this space than they ever did when they essentially created a single sign on to Writely four years ago.

Rumors have been buzzing about since June, but Google just made it official — the company’s baking Google Voice calls right into Gmail today. Like the Google Chat text, voice and video chat integrated into the web-based email client in prior years, full phone calls will also be an option using VoIP technology from the Gizmo5 aquisition. Google’s demoing the “Call from Gmail” service for us in San Francisco this morning, and it’s looking like it’s not free, but fairly cheap — a product manager just called Paris for $0.02 a minute. Incoming calls pop up as a chat window in Gmail (and ring your Google Voice-equipped phones simultaneously) and you press a “Call phone” button that appears near the top of the Chat window to send an outbound call, at which point a dialer appears where you can copy and paste numbers or tap them in manually. Users can screen incoming calls or send them to voicemail with a single tap.

You’ll be able to make calls to US and Canadian landlines completely free of charge, buying prepaid credits using Google Checkout for international landline calling at $0.02 a minute and a good bit more (We saw $0.19 to Spain) for calls to international mobile devices. Google will sell its own credits for the program (via Google Checkout), which should be available in a few weeks, but the Voice in Gmail service goes live today in the US and will begin rolling out to users immediately. Google’s only committed to free calls to US and Canadian landlines through the end of the year, as paid international calls are the sole revenue stream here: “Our hope is we’ll be able to make enough margin on international calls to keep offering it at that low price,” a product manager told us. We’re going to give some VoIP goodness a spin right now, check back later for impressions!

Update: Google Voice product manager Vincent Paquet confirmed that the service’s newfound VoIP functionality does indeed stem from the Gizmo5 acquisition — Call from Gmail is partially based on Gizmo5 technology, was developed by a team including Gizmo5 engineers, and resides in part on Gizmo5′s backend. He wouldn’t comment any more specifically on the technology than that. Also, that cherry red phone booth up top apparently isn’t just for show — Google’s agreed to trial free calling booths at an airport and a pair of universities!

Update 2: We’ve just tested Call to Gmail and Skype side by side using the exact same setup, and found Google’s service boasts surprisingly competitive voice quality to the reigning incumbent. When we called a fellow editor’s iPhone 4 from a Gmail-equipped laptop, the sentences he spoke sounded much clearer than through Skype, with each individual word crisper and more recognizable even as volume and pitch sounded much the same. Unfortunately for Google, the inverse wasn’t true — Skype did a much better job canceling noise from our integrated laptop microphone in a crowded room.

1. “Micro-soft’s” First Ever Mention

The first ever mention of “Microsoft” was in a letter from Bill Gates to co-founder Paul Allen in 1975. Gates initially wrote the company name as Micro-soft, which made sense considering it’s a portmanteau of “microcomputer” and “software.”

Losing the hyphen, “Microsoft” was officially registered as a company in November, 1976 in New Mexico where Gates and Allen were working with their first major customer, MITS. Microsoft didn’t move to its current campus in Redmond, Washington until 1986.

The Microsoft logo has changed several times over the years, the current “Pac-Man” logo was introduced in 1987, but previous to that was the “blibbet” logo that’s pictured above. The “blibbet” refers to the stylized “o” and was apparently once the name of a burger served in the Microsoft company cafeteria.

2. Brian Eno Composed “The Microsoft Sound”

Pioneering musician Brian Eno was the musical brains behind Window 95’s start up tune, dubbed “The Microsoft Sound.”

The influential musician, who has worked with the likes of David Bowie and U2, told the San Francisco Chronicle that making such a short piece of music was “funny” and “amazing.” Eno likened the process to “making a tiny little jewel.”

Other musical trivia from the launch of Windows 95 is, of course, the use of The Rolling Stones “Start Me Up” in the ad campaign, while a related Eno fact is that he also composed the music for the computer game Spore.

3. Microsoft’s Fave Food Is Pizza

Although not quite at Google()’s level of snack-tastic, free-for-all wonder, Microsoft does offer free drinks. Over 23 million gratis beverages are downed on the corporate campus each year.

Apparently the top two drinks of choice for Microsoft staffers are milk and OJ. There’s also free candy on the Microsoft campus shuttle.

As far as food goes, Microsoft has around 35 cafeterias (one of which is pictured above) serving around 37,000 people each day. Pizza tops the list of most popular meal.

4. Microsoft Uses Codenames

Ever since the company’s first operating system, Microsoft has worked on its projects under codenames, of which Wikipedia() has a long list. Apparently Gates was ready to launch Windows under the name “Interface Manager” before he was persuaded to change it by an employee.

Past codenames include “Longhorn,” “Lone Star,” and “Vienna.” While you might be tempted to add “Mojave,” to that list, it’s actually part of a Microsoft ad campaign. The “Mojave Experiment” was a marketing exercise that battled Vista’s poor PR by presenting the software to new users as a fresh product.

5. The Average “Softie”

The average Microsoft employee, or “Softie” as they call themselves, is a 38-year-old male with the average salary for a developer coming in at $106,000.

Microsoft currently employs 88,180 people who work across 32,404,796 square feet of Microsoft’s premises, over 50,000 of which are U.S.-based. The male to female ratio is very high among Microsoft’s American employees with a staggering 76% male workforce.

6. Microsoft Celebrates Anniversaries With M&Ms

All companies have their little in-house traditions, and Microsoft is no exception. It seems it’s customary for Softies to celebrate their yearly employment anniversaries with candy, and more specifically, M&Ms.

Each anniversary, a Microsoft employee is expected to provide one pound of M&Ms for every year they’ve worked. That means if Bill Gates observed the tradition, he should have turned up with 33 pounds of M&Ms on June 27, 2008.

7. Microsoft’s Stock Has Split Nine Times

Microsoft has split its stock nines times since it went public back in March 1986. Put very, very simply, a company will generally split its stock when its share price becomes too high.

Since Microsoft has had six 2-for-1 splits and three 3-for-1 splits, one original Microsoft share would now be equal to 288 shares today. Interestingly the price of Microsoft’s stock at its initial public offering was $21 a share, at the time of writing a share is now around the $23 mark. One original MSFT share would now be worth over $6,000.

8. Microsoft Has a Huge Art Collection

No, we’re not talking about Clip Art. Microsoft is one of the largest corporate collectors of artworks with over 5,000 contemporary pieces including painting, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, ceramics, studio glass, and multimedia works. Microsoft gathers arts from local artists, up-and-coming artists and big names such as Cindy Sherman, Chuck Close and Takashi Murakami.

A large proportion of the works are on display at more than 150 of Microsoft’s many campuses, as the company subscribes to the belief that art in the workplace reduces stress, increases productivity and encourages discussions and expression of opinions.

9. Microsoft Asks Strange Interview Questions

Microsoft has a reputation in the industry for asking off-beat, off-the-wall questions during its job interview. The most oft-quoted question is: “Why is a manhole cover round?” Whether this particular example is genuine, or an urban legend, it’s certainly true that Microsoft employs a very unusual, and forward-thinking interview process. It’s even rumored that companies like Google have since emulated the style.

Rather than plain “Where do you see yourself in five years” type questions, Microsoft is more likely to ask you to solve a logic puzzle or think through a problem like “Design a coffee maker that will be used by astronauts.” Obviously, Microsoft isn’t planning to go into the coffee-in-space industry anytime soon, but the process serves to find candidates that can think creatively.

10. Microsoft Holds Over 10,000 Patents

Microsoft holds over 10,000 patents and files around 3,000 every year, ranking as one of the top five patent owners in the U.S.

Although a large majority of the patents relate to obscure elements of software, the 5,000th and 10,000th were consumer-friendly, easily-understandable ideas. The 5,000th was for tech in Xbox 360 games that lets people “watch” a video game remotely, while the 10,000th was for the Microsoft Surface, linking real-life objects with data and images.

Microsoft also rewards its staff members for securing a new patent. Besides a $1,500 bonus, they get a wooden plaque and a decorative black “cube” that features their name, as well as the title and date of the patent.

BONUS: The Microsoft Campus is Full of Bunnies!

Our very own Jolie O’Dell found a great factoid about the Microsoft Corporate Campus, she gleaned while on a recent visit.

“So, back in the mists of time, some people dumped a bunch of rapidly reproducing pet bunnies — leftovers from kids’ Easter gifts — on a grassy knoll near the MSFT campus,” Jolie said. “The bunnies started doing what bunnies do best, that is, making more bunnies.

At one point, there were so many that MSFT staff had to start catching them and having them spayed and neutered! Nowadays, you’ll still see lots of rabbits hopping around, though. Way cuter than Google’s goats.”

It seems the bunny proliferation has been a long term issue. According to a 1998 Seattle Times article, the “Redmond rabbit problem” does not just affect Microsoft, but Nintendo, Eddie Bauer and other companies in the area.

The problem back then spawned the Redmond Rabbit Coalition group (many members of which are now involved in the current day Evergreen Rabbit Rescue) who campaign for a humane solution to the ongoing pest problem.
